September Is Busy Railfan Month In Missouri And Kansas

The month of September, 2017 was an active one for me as far as rail-fanning goes. It began on Labor Day Monday 9/4/17 as my wife, daughter and I went to visit the Grinter Sunflower Farm located just west of Kansas City in the city of Lawrence, Kansashttp://www.kansascity.com/entertainment/article170172727.html It is famous for its vast stretch of large sunflowers. We then walked around in Downtown Lawrence and caught this Prairie 2-6-2 Santa Fe #1073 on display.

Then after  having lunch at Noodles & Company, we headed to the Lawrence Amtrak Station.https://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServerpagename=am/am2Station/Station_Page&code=LRC There, I was able to take pics of the interior and exterior of the building but also caught Amtrak P42DC Engines # 174 & 200 that pulled into the station with several passenger cars behind them just seconds after I arrived. They were there only minutes before pulling out again, which I also caught.

The Kansas Pacific Railroad opened a line from Kansas City to Lawrence, Kansas in 1864. According to the Kansas Historical Society, the first locomotive to operate south of the Kaw River, the “Ottawa” crossed it in Lawrence  November 1st, 1867. To qualify for bonds, the Leavenworth, Lawrence And Galveston Railroad had to lay track from Lawrence to Ottawa by January 1st, 1868. It was completed just one day ahead of the deadline.

Next up was a Sunday 9/10/17 visit to the city of Mulberry, Kansas where my Father-In-Law Bill Mapes grew up and where his father William R Mapes Sr and some of my Father-In-Law’s brothers worked (and one still does) for the Kansas City Southern Railroad. We had been invited to attend a birthday party at the home of Denise’s Aunt Connie Bright. While I was there, I visited a couple of local crossings (shown in pics below) but missed a couple of trains that came through.

Mulberry (formerly known as Mulberry Grove: again according to the KS Historical Society) was founded in 1866 by N.W. Taylor and was originally on the Cherryvale Division of the Kansas City, Fort Scott & Gulf Railroad.

On our way back to Kansas City, we passed through nearby Arcadia as well as Fort Scott, Kansas where I took these pics.

Arcadia, Kansas began as Hathaway, after its founder Phil Wing Hatahway in 1857 (later changed to ArcadiaRural Beauty” at the suggestion of Hathaway‘s sweetheart from Chicago. The story of how present day Arcadia was established is through the legend of the “Nighttime Post Office Switch.” It involved the railroad being extended from Fort Scott to the coal fields of Crawford County, missing Old Arcadia by about 1/25 mile. The coal company put in a coal loading switch, naming it Finley after Captain George Finley who helped build the station. Where mailbags were picked up and dropped off later led to a post office getting the name of Arcadia rather than Finley literally overnight.

The next time I had a weekday off with no other plans, I finally made it to one of the many Missouri towns I had been meaning to visit (as far as rail-fanning goes), as I used to attend weekly sales meetings there when I was in toner cartridge sales with Laser Supercharge back in the early 2000’s, Pleasant Hill. The Missouri Pacific Depot there was constructed in 1903. Like other cities in the KC area, such as Parkville, Lee’s Summit, and Weston, in addition to displaying many original railroad artifacts, the depot is also the current office of the Pleasant Hill Chamber Of Commerce. Pleasant Hill (that started on a bet according to local historian Jeff Wilson (that I was introduced to by Tina from the Chamber Of Commerce) was originally platted in 1844 and was moved to its current location when the railroad was built through, in 1865.

Jeff owns two local businesses, Resto 101 and Retro On The Rails (and that one is also located in the Depot building. Check out both on Facebook. I felt like a celebrity as once Tina introduced me to Jeff, I was allowed tours of Retro On The Rails as well as the Bally Peddler next to it that were not even open that day. I promised to return with my family some weekend as these businesses are only open Thursday thru Saturday. I also offered to help in any way I can with any railroad related special events they hold in the future. I caught two Union Pacific trains, one likely a grainer and the other a mixed freight (and appropriately enough it even had some Missouri Pacific gondolas in the manifest. )

Next up was Blue Springs, Missouri after I attended a Kansas City Chiefs Red Friday Pep Rally hosted by Community America Credit Union on Friday 9/15/17. I caught a Kansas City Southern train headed through town with two Gray Ghost locomotives on point as the downtown area was just opening its Fall Festival.

The Texas, Oklahoma and Eastern Railroad (reporting mark TOE) is a Class III short-line railroad headquartered in De Queen, Arkansas.

TOE operates a 39.8 mile line in Oklahoma from the Arkansas state line (where it interchanges with De Queen and Eastern Railroad, an affiliate with whom it shares its headquarters) to Valliant, Oklahoma (where it interchanges with Kiamichi Railroad).

TOE traffic generally consists of forest products. TOE was incorporated in 1910.

Great Rail Sites Volume 3: The Trackside Photographer

Since becoming a rail-fan in 2008 and starting Legacies On The Rails 5 years ago this month, and through the hobby of and process known as rail-fanning for me has mostly been focused on watching trains, and driving by rail-yards looking for that next great pic and/or video of a locomotive, a Heritage Unit, or other piece of “Fallen Flag” equipment or something I had not caught before. Visiting rail museums, locomotive, or caboose displays, depots (or depot/rail museums) and riding and recording various excursion trains. You’ll recall that in August, 2015 the Legacies On The Rails Art Show took place at Cathy Kline‘s art studio at the CB&Q Depot in Parkville, Missouri.

Now, I did start the Facebook Page Railroad Bridges: Related Photos & Video. I do take pics of a grade crossing, or signals here and there, and honestly, some of my favorite pics, be they mine or by another rail-fan, are those in which the equipment is passing under signal towers. I take pics of the buildings at the crossings that tell which railroad they belong to, and have the mile-post marker, and often a phone number to call to report crossing emergencies. I am always looking for more Facebook Groups to share these pics on.

But in hind-sight, I don’t feel like I ever gave that much time in thought about the Railroad Landscape itself which is what our featured site today is all about, which is The Trackside Photographer.

Since March of 2016, thetracksidephotographer.com has focused on 24 different categories that you will find clearly listed on their website, and as is stated in their Mission Statement, focuses on what is along the tracks…..not on the tracks. This is clearly just as important to what makes up railroads past and present as any of the topics I have been focusing on.

The Trackside Photographer publishes a new article every Thursday and they are always looking for more photographer/authors to submit work for publication within certain guidelines, that are also accessible in their website. You can submit your work to them at tracksidephotographer@embarqmail.com .

This Edition’s Railroad Equipment Profile is this Missouri Pacific Caboose that I photographed recently in Buckner, Missouri, #11078. The 11000 Series Cabooses were used by Missouri Pacific for yard and transfer service. After December, 1982, Mo-Pac had 651 cabooses, including 407 bay-window, 208 cupola, and 36 transfer models. They were assigned Class CA-19 through Class CA-35 designations. 11078 is one of the CA-19 Class. # 11078 is one of several built by T&P in Marshall, Texas in 1955, and  rebuilt in Sedalia, Mo 1966-1971. It was removed from service 10/15/84 at Sedalia. Thanks to Utahrails.net for this information.

Rail Fan Update: First Four Months Of 2017

LOTR Post 17-2014

I am happy to say that in addition to now having posted 13 previous blogs on this site compared to only four in 2016, and having become much more diverse in what I am posting about, this has been a very busy first four months of 2017 on the Rail-Fan front.

So far, it has had me in 12 different cities between the states of Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas:  In Missouri: Birmingham, Buckner, Granby, Kansas City, (and several areas in Kansas City) North Kansas City, Parkville, Sibley, and St Joseph. Just Wichita in Kansas thus far. In Arkansas: Eureka Springs, Rogers, and Springdale. I also took note of cities that I could identify as having rail lines by seeing tracks from the highway, as well as other cities I want to check out either in person or via the internet eventually to see if they do anytime I was not the driver on our trips to Wichita, Kansas and Arkansas this year. I noted 42 on the recent trip to Arkansas. So, this leaves a lot more cities to visit on my upcoming yearly pilgrimage to the Losh-Worley Family Reunion that will take me from Kansas City to Willow Springs, Missouri July 30th to July 2nd, and then vacation time I have from July 10th-22nd, 2017. There are many more sites in Kansas City, proper to check out as well as cities I want to return to.

I have photographed and/or filmed 20 different models of locomotives thus far, not to mention passenger cars, freight cars, coal cars, tankers, bare tables, covered hoppers, center beams, coil cars, empty or loaded Intermodal well cars, etc. The locomotive models are: Diesel: AC4400CW, ALCO C420, ALCO SW1, C449W, C4460AC, D840CW, D944CW, ES44C4, ES44DC,ET44C4, FP-45, GP38-2, GP40-3, GP50, NW2, SD70ACE, SD70M, SD75M, steamers: 4-4-0 and 4-8-4.

I have photographed and/or filmed 35 different railroads or companies with rail equipment, current as well as Excursion Trains and “Fallen Flags“, Heritage Units, display or in current road or yard use: Arkansas & Missouri, Burlington-Northern, BNSF, CB&Q, Central Kansas Rwy, Canadian Malting Co Ltd, Canadian National, Canadian Pacific, Caterpillar, Citirail (CREX), Chicago-Northwestern, Conrail, CSX, Denver & Rio Grande Western, Eureka Springs & North Arkansas, Ferromex, Frisco, GATX, GMTX Locomotive Leasing Partners, Grand Trunk-Western, Hannibal & St Joseph, KC Power & Light, Kansas City Southern, KC Southern De-Mexico, Kansas & Oklahoma, Kansas City Terminal, New York Central, Norfolk Southern, Rail Box, Rail Link Of Montana, Santa Fe, Soo Line, TTX, Union Pacific, Wabash. Now, mind you, these are just the ones I have been able to positively identify, but with all the various equipment you see on trains, it is sometimes hard to catch Reporting Marks on everything, or have time to look them all up.

In January through April, I did 29 of my now 36 Legacies On The Rails Fan Videos on You Tube. I was up to 261 LOTR Fan Videos overall by the end of April and am now up to 266 overall since the beginning of May. I also recorded Episodes #13, 14 of the Legacies On The Rails Radio (Podcast). You may recall my mention in my last posting that Episode 14 (in 2 parts) was recorded while riding a passenger car on the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad!

Playing Catch-Up On This Edition Of Legacies….On The Rails

A lot has happened since my last posting and I apologize for not keeping this site up. But, a while back, this little Chrome-Book computer that my wife and I share started shutting down on me, when I’d be in the middle of a blog, and even if I had hit Save Draft, it would usually only save the title and a few words, when I may have been several paragraphs into it. By the time this would happen, it would be too close to time for me to head to work, or needing to get to bed if I was writing after work, for me to have the time, energy or patience to go back and redo it. Thought I was done blooging until I can somehow, someday, get a better computer, but today, decided to try again.

In my last posting, I shared about what was then the upcoming Legacies On The Rails Railroad Art Show at the Cathy Kline Art Gallery located in the former CB&Q Depot in Parkville, Missouri. That did take place for the entire month of August but I have to sadly report that only one painting sold, bringing in only $30 for the Model Rail Experience at Kansas City Union Station, and I am still waiting for an opportunity to go get that check to take to them. I hope we can try again next year,despite how things went this year.

I have begun to make more frequent visits to to Union Station on a regular basis, but not in a volunteer capacity, just going to take pics and video as a way to kill time in between having lunch with my wife, who works directly across from my building in Downtown KC, and time for me to head to work. Being a bi-vocational Pastor’s Assistant for Legacies On The Rails Fan Video #111, I am now up to #138. This has included not only videos from the Depot in Parkville, and all the local yards here in town, but also a ride on the train at our local amusement park Worlds Of Fun, thanks to some tickets that my buddy Chris Noble set us up with. I have also been doing picture silde-show videos like this one.

New Life Baptist Church, and time with family on my days off from my full-time job keeps me very, very busy.

I also joined the Board Of Directors of the Operation Christmas Train Set Foundation at the invitation of Founder/CEO Dustin A Fisher since my last posting http://operationchristmastrainset.org/ . OCTSF
In the Fall of 2016, I will be working with the group in Dustin’s town of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma for Midwest Legacies On The Rails Train Days-a week long event during which we will install permanent Model Rail displays in all the Oklahoma City Public Library locations. We are hopeful that this will catch on with other public library systems around the country. It would be awesome to be able to be in a at least one city a year if not more doing the same thing. Schools, Civic organizations, there is no end to the possibilities. Maybe I can even get a KCMO Chapter started in 2016.

In October, my girls and I paid a visit to the Belton, Grandview & Kansas City Railroad in Belton, Missouri. They would love to have me come and volunteer with them in a promotional capacity, as well as being trained as a Conductor. But right now, as much as I would like to, I just can’t see a way to make the time. Maybe next year, we’ll see. Here are a few pics and a video from that.

The Saturday before Thanksgiving, I reconnected with my old buddy Todd Gordon, who gave me a last minute invitation to attend a community dinner that was being held that night in his town of Camden Point, Missouri and to make a presentation on the Interurban Railroad-otherwise known as the Kansas City, Clay County & St Joseph Railway-one that I was not familiar with until that day, but always love researching any railroad history, so I took the challenge, and talked about it, after also discussing why I love railroads.

All Aboard For The Legacies On The Rails Art Show And Local Rail Action!

I’ve been needing to update this for some time. But now that I am, let me kick this off by inviting you to the Legacies On The Rails Railroad Art Show. this will be a month-long event and it “heads down the rails” on that journey with a reception on Saturday, August 1st, 2015 6pm-8pm CT at the Cathy Kline Art Gallery located at 8701 NW Riverpark Dr in Parkville, Missouri which is, you may recall from my February 11th posting, a former CB&Q Depot that also houses the Parkville Area Chamber Of Commerce.

If you are an artist interested in having your work displayed for sale during the show, you must contact Cathy Kline on Facebook under her name or Cathy Kline Art Gallery or cathyklineartgallery@gmail.com and have your work submitted no later than July 30th. The best part is, 10% of sales for August will benefit the Model Rail Experience at Kansas City Union Station-which I am waaaay behind on making an appearance at. Will do that this coming week. Looking forward to seeing a good donation made to them and hopeful that this can become at least a yearly event, if not more frequent-we’ll have to see. But I am so incredibly humbled that my friend Cathy is hosting this event, and naming it after the LOTR blog and Podcast, and I hope you will seriously plan to come and be a part of it!

Since my trips to Branson and Columbia, (almost forgot to share this), I have been to my yearly Losh/Worley Family Reunion (our 41st annual) in Willow Springs, Missouri. That was over the 4th of July weekend. Along the way,I made stops at the Jefferson Avenue Foot Bridge in Springfield, Missouri, that overlooks the rail yard there in Downtown Springfield and got lots of pics and video, as well as getting pics and video at the crossing that is just down the road from the Lion’s Club Hall where we have the reunion, in Willow Springs, and getting pics and video in Cabool, and Diggins, Missouri on my drive back to Kansas City. As technical difficulties have reared their ugly head today, just going to share the videos that I know you will still enjoy.

But, getting back to local stuff, I have been down to the gallery several times lately, delivering items to help bring more permanent railroad atmosphere, including HO Scale train cars, a brake service valve for standard railroad freight cars that comes courtesy of New York Air Brake, which you will also recall from a previous LOTR POSTING, and as I have been into getting some of my train photos enlarged lately, in addition to several 8×10’s I am now displaying with my rail collection at home, I had a couple 11×14’s made (all from the Gladstone, Missouri Wal-Mart’s Photo Center) that are from outside the Art Gallery, as well as in neighboring Riverside, Missouri, in hopes that they can be displayed there-although my skill as  a photographer may or may not be suitable for them to be displayed there but if not, I will simply bring them home and display them. Of course, anytime I go down there, I make time to watch and listen for trains, and have caught a few.

Was going to share photos too, but the aforementioned technical difficulties as far as time’s sake (and my nerves) goes, is making that impractical right now.

In addition to that, I got a really good tip from former school classmate and now buddy from New Life Baptist Church, Todd Hawes that the BNSF Yard off Metropolitan Ave behind the Walmart in Kansas City, Kansas was a hopping place, and he wasn’t kidding. Got these pics and video, by standing on a huge mound of gravel on an open piece of land next to Walmart. Thanks, Todd! I will return often. I also caught a WAMX Switcher working some “Oil Cans” off 22nd/Kansas Ave and got some UP Engines off SB 7th St Trafficway. KCK is a major rail hub that I encourage any railfan to check out! Again, just going to share the videos this time. Enjoy.

In addition, I took my daughter Cara out rail-fanning one day, (the first of hopefully many) in hopes that she can score some photos worthy of display at the Cathy Kline Art Gallery. We hit some spots in Liberty, Missouri, the Chouteau Grain Elevator off Birmingham Rd just southwest of N Brighton Ave/210 Hwy, and caught the train the freight cars we shot belonged to, led by Santa Fe Blue Bonnet #3174 over by the former Sam’s Town Casino.

Then, while I went to NKC Hospital to visit my mother-in-law who unfortunately is there for her nearly 15th time in the past year, and like some of the other times, has been stuck there for over a month now, I found a great vantage point on a hill on the  Armour Rd side of the hospital and shot trains leaving EB from the Norfolk Southern yard and got several pictures and a video. Glad I can share both this time.

A couple days later, I even got a pic of my very first railroad Heritage Locomotive, in the Norfolk Southern Veteran’s Unit #6920 when I looked out of my Mother-In-Law’s hospital room on Sunday afternoon (that overlooks the NS Yard) and saw it sitting there. Unfortunately, it was blocked in so much that the best I could do was a long-distance shot from the roof of the hospital’s Pavilion parking garage. But I’ll take that!

Anniversary/Rail-Fan Trip Was Well Worth It

Exciting Anniversary Vacation Ahead Including Lots Of Rail-Fan Activity

My wife Denise and I are are about to celebrate 26 years together and 25 years married with in three days of each other on April 25th and April 28th. To do this here in 2015, we are taking a trip together starting today that will include lots of great rail-fan activity. What’s even better is, rail stuff is not “her thing” but she does enjoy a good train excursion ride like we did on the Branson Scenic Railway in July, 2014. So, as she began to check into things for us t do, she immediately looked up several rail related activities that she could do with me-primarily for me, along with some cave and other nature activities for her interests.

The first one on our agenda that I have briefly touched on in previous posts is taking the “Murder On The Petulant Express” Mystery Dinner Train ride with the St Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railwayhttp://www.slimrr.com/ . Here are some You Tube videos from them that I found

Anyone who knows me well knows that I love history and this train ride is so much more than just that for me. It has become a wonderful history lesson. Once I knew we would be taking the “Murder On The Petulant Express” ride and that it is set in the 1930’s, I began to study the period and found that is was such a pivotal time in history with our nation in the heat of the depression, President Roosevelt initiating “The New Deal“, and as a welcome distraction during those times, what I as also a classic movie, music and radio fan consider to be the greatest movies and what we now know as Old Time Radio shows, many featuring my favorite actors, came out of that period. And, just like modern day films, there were books that came out first, that later became the inspiration for those movies, by the same titles. Names like John Steinbeck‘s The Grapes Of Wrath, Margaret Mitchell‘s Gone With The Wind, many Agatha Christie titles including Murder On The Orient Express, Joseph Kesserling‘s Arsenic & Old Lace, and Charles Bernard Nordhoff‘s Mutiny On The Bounty. Moss Hart’s You Can’t Take It With You, Richard Llewellyn’s How Green Was My Valley. The beginnings of the Little House On The Prairie Series by Laura Ingalls Wilder. The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien.

There were radio shows like The Lone Ranger, Superman, Fibber, Mcgee & Molly, Burns & Allen, Jack Benny, The Voice Of Bugle-Ann, Mr Deeds Goes To Town, and Angels With Dirty Faces. My Man Godfrey, and the list goes on…. President Roosevelt even created a theater program as part of “The New Deal“. Some of the same stars that appeared in the movies and on Old Time Radio comedies and dramas, were also the ones whose voices brought musical entertainment as well. Like Judy Garland, Kate Smith, Bing Crosby, Fred Astaire, Bob Hope, Gene Autry, and Frank Sinatra. Bands like Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Tommy Dorsey, and Harry James and Saturday Night Swings were all the rage.

Many of these groups, individual performers and radio shows were still in their prime during the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s. This is the era that my great friend and brother in the Lord John Christopher plays on his show (that if you haven’t checked out yet, you should) The Neon Beat http://www.radiogeorge.com/neonbeat/ . I am listening as I write this posting. Also check out The Neon Beat Fan Club on Facebook that I run. We have been shopping for 30’s period clothing for the ride.

But the 1930’s were not only a great era for social and economic reform and entertainment. The St Louis Iron Mountain & Southern is pulled by a former  Pennsylvania Railroad Streamliner and the 30’s were the glory days for the streamliners.

The first one is from the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad that my paternal grandfather and one of his brothers worked for.

I also seem to keep having run-ins with things from the 1930’s. I watch Antiques Roadshow and American Pickers a lot and more often than not these last couple weeks, have been running across items from the 1930’s. Including this recent episode of Antiques Roadshow in Birmingham that even featured my Facebook friend Julie Hedgepeth Williams http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/archive/201403A25.html . Julie has two family members that survived the Titanic that she has written an award winning book about A Rare Titanic Family https://sites.google.com/site/raretitanicfamily/ . The Roadshow episode featured a depression era WPA Poster.

Then, as our daughter had a recent extra credit project that required us taking a trip down to Kansas City’s Loose Park, where my wife and I said “I Do” in the Rose Garden 25 years ago, something caught my eye that had not before. This. Look at the date.

Ironically enough, my mother, who passed in March of 2012, but was at my wedding at this site, has the maiden name of Smith. Who knows?

Next came an early anniversary present my wife got me of some railroad collector plates. One was from the CB&Q Railroad.

She got me three of them from our local Disabled American Veterans Thrift Store  http://www.redracksthriftstores.com/wordpress/ on Tuesday, but told me there were more and that they would be having a 50% off sale starting at 7am on Wednesday, so I would have to make the sacrifice of getting up at 6am on my first vacation day. It wasn’t a problem. One of the ones I picked up (even got a duplicate of to eventually donate along with other items to the Cathy Kline Art Gallery where the Legacies On The Rails Art Show is to be held Saturday August 1st from 6-8pm at 8701 NW River Park Dr in Parkville, Mo), was this one.

The Santa Fe “Super Chief” from 1937. I am not a believer in coincidence but rather that God puts us in “the right place…at the right time”. I feel that not only about the train ride on Saturday, but my marriage to Denise, our family, and certainly about this whole thing of my having become a growing  rail-fan these last several years and everywhere that journey has taken me. Other than maybe my love of our Kansas City Royals who I also collect things related to, love going to watching and listening to games and who I blog about at https://loshmansportslive.wordpress.com/ this feels more like where I belong, I think because of the rich family history I have in it than any other hobby or interest I have had,

Also on our trip will be visits to the  Historic Railpark & Train Museum in Bowling Green, Kentucky, who I have recently messaged and told of our impending visit

as well as the Tennessee Central Railway Museum in Nashville, Tennessee

Was going to share my videos from this week but though they are uploaded, they didn’t show up when I brought up You-Tube, but I will next time!

Legacies On The Rails Roadshow Heads East To Historic Lee’s Summit

Just as promised in my last posting, since I also had a hospital visit to make there, the Legacies On The Rails Road Show destination yesterday was historic Downtown Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Hometown of my buddy Fred Liggett, of the Lee’s Summit Tribune. Anytime that I can visit a depot that is for one of the railroads that I have family history in, that’s always an extra plus for me and since the one there is the former Missouri Pacific Depot, I was thrilled.

Not only that but this has now become another of my favorite regular spots to visit for rail-fanning, as Union Pacific trains, much like they do at the depots I have visited in Weston and Parkville, rumble by there multiple times a day, and my timing was perfect as I had just stepped out of my car when it was clear that my first video catch of the day was upon me, with the blast of a UP 7982’s air horn. Here are both videos that I took during my visit.

The former Missouri Pacific Depot in Lee’s Summit is third generation. The very first depot was a box-car. Later a wooden building that later burned, and was then replaced by the current brick structure that like the depot in Parkville,housing its Chamber Of Commerce, this one  currently houses the Lee’s Summit Chamber Of Commerce. One of their ladies was kind enough to oblige me in taking my  photo shown above with the caboose that sits next to it. The Depot is currently undergoing renovations. When I asked if someone could share with me about the history of the depot,I was directed to Kathy Smith-Executive Director of the Historical Society Of Lee’s Summit Museum http://www.leessummithistory.net/ .

Kathy was so gracious in taking time to ask if I needed anything as I looked around the facility, where a Lee’s Summit Veterans display is currently housed, as well as in taking time to share the information I sought with me. I was thrilled to find out that the museum is housed in a former WPA Post Office since I have been studying the 1930’s as I eluded to in my last posting in preparation for doing the 1930’s murder mystery ride wit the St Louis, Iron Mountain & Southern Railway  on 4/25/15.

Kathy shared about how important the railroad has always been to the city of Lee’s Summit. It helped them rebuild after the ravages of the Civil War. A time period that saw the likes of Cole Younger and Bloody Bill Anderson. And Dr Pleasant Lea. Ir brought jobs, and made sure that farmers could ship their goods, receive supplies, and send equipment out for repairs and get it back. It has provided for the transportation of people, and still does today with the Amtrak Missouri River Runner coming through several times a day. It is one of the reasons behind the rich history of Lee’s Summit. History represented by murals like these on buildings around town. Speaking of Cole Younger, Kathy Smith was also well acquainted with our own Cathy Kline of the Cathy Kline Art Gallery, as Cathy Kline also has a Cole Younger mural there in town, which I missed on this trip but hope to catch next time.

I also found this mural inside the Lee’s Summit Historical Society Museum by Aileen Franklin-which is among many of her circa 1960 Lee’s Summit history murals including The Community Church, The First School, Dr Pleasant Lea, Early Settlers, and The Star Route.

Unfortunately, like some of my other Legacies On The Rails Road Show trips, a technical issue bit me in that the audio of my conversation with Kathy that I thought recorded and that I planned to upload as Legacies On The Rails-The Podcast Volume Two did not record. Even If I had known this as soon as we were done, she would not have had time for a re-take. I should have taken video to upload to You-Tube as I seemed to be doing well with that on the day. But, more opportunities will come very soon when I return to the Lee’s Summit Historical Society Museum to help bring several railroad artifacts up from their basement to display on the  main floor.

Kansas City Union Station Model Rail Experience Weekly Volume Four

Welcome back to Kansas City Union Station Model Rail Experience Weekly. This is for the week ending March 13th, 2015 and I apologize for my tardiness in getting this posted but I have been dealing with some technical issues. There will not be a blog for the week ending 3/20/15 as I was not at Union Station but was instead meeting with Cathy Kline of the Cathy Kline Art Gallery housed in the former CB&Q Depot in Parkville, Missouri to discuss details for the Legacies On The Rails Art Show that will be held in August, 2015 with the official date yet TBD. I will post an update as soon as possible (has to do wit my work schedule) but I am happy to say that 10% of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Kansas City Union Station Model Rail Experience! Ted had asked me about looking into a fundraiser for the MRE so there’s a great start!

After I arrived and got the above photos and video from Union Station‘s back lot , I went in to the Model Rail Experience and found Ted Tschirhart and Fritz Gastreich hard at work on model rail road piece repairs-Ted on a steam engine, and Fritz on one of the G Gauge Amtrak passenger cars, repairing a coupling that had come off. Louis Seibel was dealing with some issues with cars on one of the mixed gauges layout tracks.

I soon discovered something else I thought was cool. I had thought I was the youngest member of the Model Rail Experience volunteer staff, until I met Steve Cassity and his eight-year old son Jaden Cassity. Steve brought Jaden down to the MRE a few years ago, where he became simply enamored with the various model train sets and now Jaden is a volunteer right along with his Dad. Below is Steve, and Jaden is working on righting one of the G Gauge trains that had derailed. Steve and Jaden both commented on how Jaden’s current size is a real advantage because when one of the trains breaks down or derails in part of a layout that would be hard for one of the adults to reach, Steve can simply lift Jaden up over the plexi-glass and let Jordan either retrieve the piece for repair, set the train back on the track, back it up, or pull it forward. Or even simply move a piece that is simply needing transfer from one track or layout to another, return a piece to a track after it leaves the Model Rail Experience Office/Repair Shop. Steve says that Ted has become a great mentor to Jaden who admires Ted very much. There was also a bonus for me in the fact that I got to meet Steve’s brother Fred Cassity, who invited me to come and tour New York Air Brake in Riverside, Missouri where they refurbish braking systems and other parts for trains. I took him up on that on Wednesday 3/18/15 and my next blog posting will cover that. It will actually be the first of likely a series of postings as I make more visits to their facility in the near future.

So, as usual, a few different things to focus on this session. One of those is yet another of the various scales of model rail layouts that can be found in the Model Rail Experience facility.  this time, it’s N & Z Scale. Legacies On The Rails Road Show Has Busy End To February

The last week of February proved to be a busy and fun experience for the Legacies On The Rails Road Show. It started with me planning to take a solo trip to Warrensburg, Missouri on Sunday, 2/22/15 to visit my Cousin Renita Tilton who was in the hospital there with cancer (would appreciate your prayers for her and her family) and do a bit of Road Show or general rail-fan stops along the way. But then my wife and daughter wanted to come along and also go visit my son John who attends the University Of Missouri, lives and works in Columbia. This was initially due to the fact that my wife thought Warrensburg was a lot closer to Columbia then they are, so what would have been maybe a four hour excursion for me, turned into a twelve hour day for the three of us. But it was worth it.

So, after having breakfast with John at the Columbia IHOP, we headed back toward Warrensburg. But not before stopping a couple places along the way. The first was the former Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad Depot in Downtown Columbia that is now the Shiloh Bar & Grille.

Next it was on to another former MKT Depot in Booneville, Missouri. Unfortunately, it was not open to allow us access to see what is on display inside, but we were able to enjoy the sight of this beautiful Spanish style building’s exterior as well as the MKT 134 Caboose that is on display outside and get some pictures and video.

And, of course, you already saw the caboose by itself at the start of this posting. Then after visiting my Cousin in the hospital, the next stop before heading back to Kansas City was the former Missouri Pacific Railroad Depot, currently used by Amtrak, BNSF and Union Pacific in Downtown Warrensburg. It opened in 1889-the same year that the former CB&Q Depot that I recently posted about in Parkville, Missouri that currently houses the Parkville Area Chamber as well as the Cathy Kline Art Gallery https://www.facebook.com/cathyklinefineart was built. Stop in and check it out and stayed tuned to Legacies On The Rails for updates on the Legacies On The Rails Art Show that we hope to have take place there in early Summer. Unfortunately, though the Amtrak/BNSF/UP Depot building was open and I did, as you can see in the video, take a quick look inside, there was no one there to tell me about the depot and no trains coming or going at present. But I did help myself to the Amtrak Vacations Magazine that was part of the free literature they had available.

On Monday, 2/23/15, I headed back to Parkville, Missouri briefly and caught these BNSF and Union Pacific videos.

Then on Wednesday, 2/25/15, Jordan Gallacher and I headed up to Weston, Missouri to visit the former CB&Q Depot that currently houses the Weston City Hall, has some great CB&Q items on display including some that belonged to my friend Craig Coffey’s father during his days with the CB&Q Railroad and has a caboose on display that was originally a Union Pacific car but is now painted in the green & yellow Burlington-Northern scheme.It was painted this way and moved to Weston after the family of Ed Kirk, a Burlington-Northern Engineer who was killed in a car accident on his way to work (like my grandfather John Losh of the CB&Q was killed on his way home from work in Keokuk,Iowa in 1964), wanted something to honor Ed’s memory, bought it in St Joseph, Missouri, had it moved to Weston and BN paid to have it put on rails.

Unfortunately, the video I took there of City Clerk Kim Kirby telling us about the depot and the rail videos I got of Union Pacific and BNSF trains rumbling through Weston and one of them as it passed the depot were lost when Jordan and I returned to my home after the trip, and I thought I had all the pics and video saved to my computer and started the upload process of the videos to You Tube, removed my camera’s memory card from my computer and cleared it. But I had saved the photos. And, as my friend Craig (who also told me the Ed Kirk story) said, that just means a repeat visit to Weston in the near future.

And,on our way to take Jordan home to Liberty, got this video of a UP manifest from the Richfield Rd bridge over the tracks just north of the Canadian Pacific Depot in Liberty. I was busy trying to take pics without using my zoom (didn’t realize digital zoom mode was off and kept getting blurry photos when zooming) that I missed the lead locomotive of the three engine set.)

I wrapped up the week with my now usual Friday morning volunteer session at the Model Rail Experience at Kansas City‘s Union Station, but I will cover that later this week in Kansas City Union Station Model Rail Experience Weekly-Volume Two.

My Legacies On The Rails Road Show destination for this week, on Thursday 3/5/15 accompanied this time by my daughter Cara Losh will be the former CB&Q Depot in Chillicothe, Missouri and a lunch get together for Cara and I with my Cousin George Hess, also a  former railroader.
